Our Founding Story
The Centre for Exponential Change and SELCO Foundation are building this together.

The communities living through today's crises are not waiting for solutions to arrive from elsewhere, they are already building them. Across villages, collectives, organisations, enterprises and public institutions, in small clinics, farms and markets, the people closest to the challenge continue to shape their responses grounded in lived experiences, the local knowledge, and deep accountability to their context and communities.

At the same time, the terrain is becoming increasingly complex. Climate change is colliding with poverty, livelihoods, migration, ecology, health, and governance, in ways that cannot be addressed through isolated interventions or sectoral silos alone. The challenge is no longer only about delivering solutions alone, but also about learning how to navigate interconnected and constantly evolving systems, which seems to be happening at a much faster rate than ever before.

This requires a different starting point for problem-solving, one that recognises communities not as passive recipients, but as holders of agency, intelligence, and leadership. It also requires seeing context itself as abundant with resources, relationships, capabilities, and pathways for change. The question is not simply how to introduce solutions into a system, but how to identify, strengthen, and connect what exists, and build what will adapt and sustain.

Over the years, this understanding has deeply shaped the work of the SELCO Foundation and its ecosystem of partners. Much of SELCO’s work around energy access, climate resilience, and inclusive development would have remained incomplete, and far less impactful, if approached in isolation. Real change emerged through long-term partnerships with grassroots organisations, communities, public institutions, and practitioners who were collectively navigating systems, building local ownership, and adapting solutions to diverse realities.

That single shift changes everything that follows, from how problems are framed to who gets to define what success looks like.

Systems do not emerge out of nowhere, it is shaped every day through actions, relationships, decisions, and aspirations. While systems thinking can be articulated through frameworks and theory, the practice of working within complex, open systems with intention, persistence, humility, and compassion remains far less understood.

This gap between systems thinking, modelling and practice is not abstract for us. Most civil society organisations live in firefighting mode. Every community visit surfaces five or six new problem statements, and the expectation is that you respond by tomorrow. In that rhythm, it's hard to find room to pause, study what worked elsewhere, and adapt it. Day-to-day responsiveness quietly eats long-term innovation capacity.

While the Centre for Systems Practice (CSP) is an initiative of SELCO Foundation, it emerges out of a shared learning journey. It is a collective offering shaped by a wider ecosystem of practitioners and grassroots organisations who have spent years building and learning through systems-led approaches to change- by listening, nudging, pivoting, innovating.

CSP exists to help strengthen this emerging movement for systems practice - by creating spaces where practitioners and institutions can learn from each other, deepen their ability to navigate complexity, and collectively build pathways for systemic change rooted in the realities and aspirations of the most marginalised communities.

The Centre works through three interconnected pathways:

  1. SPx Lab: Creating immersive, field-based learning spaces where practitioners build the mindset, tools, and real-world experience needed to navigate complexity and drive systemic change.

  2. Knowledge: Documenting, synthesising, and sharing field intelligence, case studies, tools, and frameworks that make systems practice more visible, accessible, and practice ready/ actionable.

  3. Network: Building a collaborative ecosystem of organisations and practitioners to amplify learnings, foster peer exchange, and enable collective approaches to complex challenges.

CSP is SELCO Foundation’s platform to make systems practice visible and accessible — bringing together practitioners, organisations, and ideas to nurture a growing movement of adaptive leaders.

Development efforts in India operate in silos. Fragmented, output-driven interventions address symptoms, while root causes remain untouched. There is no connective tissue between practitioners working on adjacent problems.
